Distinguished delegates,
Ladies and gentlemen,
First of all, I would like to thank everyone, especially the Secretary-General and Secretariat of the Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine Development, for inviting me to attend this forum and giving me the opportunity to exchange views with you all.
The theme of today's forum is deepening the open cooperation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the Belt and Road Initiative and jointly building a global community of health for mankind. I am deeply moved by this theme because deepening cooperation, especially under the Belt and Road Initiative, is the major theme and backdrop of our society today. In this context, we must find many bridges that allow us to actively connect with the world. Different countries must actively integrate, and knowledge sharing is essential in this process.
Recently, the cooperation and interaction between the People's Republic of China and Africa were fully demonstrated at the China-Africa Forum, which was held earlier this September in Beijing and attended by many African countries.
In our joint declaration, we heard and felt the People's Republic of China's concern for the African people. Malawi is one of China's strategic partners, and our bilateral strategic partnership guides us in various sectors, including healthcare, with cooperation at all levels and across multiple areas.
We know that Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history and can be seen as the crystallization of the wisdom of ancient peoples. It provides a valuable complement to Western medicine.
In Malawi, traditional medicine still holds a central position in the healthcare sector. Although our practice and level of traditional medicine are not as advanced as those of TCM, our own traditional medicine is still widely used by the people. Now, our country is gradually establishing clinics based on traditional medicine to help improve people's health.
We understand that not everyone will choose traditional medicine and related treatments, but this is not because they are ineffective; rather, it is because they are more difficult to inherit. When I arrived in China, I visited different hospitals and found that in China, patients have two options when visiting a hospital: they can go to a regular hospital or a traditional Chinese medicine hospital. The two options are quite distinct, especially in terms of prescribing medicine. TCM in China is well-developed and the cost is not high; in some cases, it is even cheaper than Western medicine. So, in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly in today’s interconnected world, we strongly encourage everyone to experience and use traditional medicine.
We know that the first Belt and Road Forum was held in 2017, and this year marks the seventh. Each forum allows us to share development, exchange different experiences, and further promote TCM, making it a valuable complement to Western medicine, which I believe is crucial.
We have always heard voices supporting the idea that traditional medicine, including TCM, should serve as an important tool for preventive medicine, as was the case during the pandemic. In Malawi, we have also followed similar practices. At that time, due to cost issues, we couldn’t acquire enough Western medicine for treatment, so people relied more on traditional medicine and herbs to prevent and control symptoms like fever and other conditions. This was a strong reminder that traditional medicine can indeed save lives.
We know that traditional medicine is an alternative form of healthcare, offering another complementary path. TCM is a supplementary therapy that can be used by people worldwide. Many African countries have their own traditional medicine and traditional practitioners. These practitioners have their own diagnostic methods, but they differ from conventional Western doctors. However, in China, traditional practitioners are held in high regard, and I believe that by learning from China’s example, we can understand each other's development and protect people's health together.
Health itself knows no international boundaries. If we aim to save lives, we must share knowledge with each other and foster the development of traditional industries through trade and other means, especially by elevating the status of traditional medicine.
Finally, I wish the 7th Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine Development great success. As Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, although I didn’t bring mooncakes, I still hope that everyone has a happy reunion with their families.
Thank you!
